While this photograph has become iconic, I think we need to remember that Lt. John Pike and Chancellor Katehi are humans as well.* Imagine them complexly, UC Davis and People of the World. Though I understand that this was a peaceful protest, it is very easy to demonize individuals, especially once we witness the horrific and harmful effects of their actions. However, I urge my peers to empathize and imagine the world in which they live, a world that can so easily turn revengeful, bitter, dangerous, and hateful.
I want to make it clear that my intention is not to defend Chancellor Katehi’s actions, but to propose the notion that she, as well as Lt. Pike and the students of UC Davis, deserve to feel safe in their own homes without fear of threat to their lives.
*In no way do I condone inhumane and unnecessary brutality and I certainly do not agree with the choices that Chancellor Katehi, Chief of Police Spicuzza, and Lt. Pike made. Mistakes happen, innocent and peaceful individuals are hurt, but before we call for resignations, we must remember to imagine these people complexly. We must remember that they are humans as well; they are individuals who have the capacity to feel fear and remorse for their actions.
With that said, we must remain peaceful, vigilant, and brave for a cause so important. The fact that these incidents have become so viral speaks volumes about our powers as individuals. We have the power to promote real change in our universities, and in a greater extent, the world in which we live. So, what do you stand for? What do you want to change?
